At Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School, we aim to provide a high quality education that enables pupils to follow the design, make and evaluate process in Design and Technology. We strive to make Design and Technology fun, practical and engaging for pupils and for skills to be built upon, with clear progression as pupils move up the school.
When designing our long-term plan, projects from Curriculum Maestro, which cover the national curriculum programmes of study for Design and Technology, are chosen carefully to ensure good coverage. Projects are knowledge-rich driver subjects or companion projects that cover Design and Technology objectives but also support learning in other curriculum areas. In delivering our curriculum this way, links are made with Geography, History, Science, Art and Music.
Pupils will be taught to design purposeful, appealing products for themselves or others, using mock-ups, templates and diagrams to communicate their ideas. Pupils in Key Stage 2 will be taught to create exploded diagrams, prototypes and use computer aided design. They will evaluate existing products and use design criteria to evaluate their ideas and products. Pupils have opportunities to use their speaking and listening skills to discuss and communicate their ideas and use ICT to aid their research. Children will explore and try out different materials, tools and processes of making. They are encouraged to ask questions, predict results and reflect on their learning.
In Design and Technology pupils will use a variety of tools and make a range of products from different materials including construction materials, textiles and ingredients for making healthy meals and snacks. They will explore and use mechanisms; wheels, axels and chassis and learn how to strengthen and join materials. They have opportunities for cutting, shaping, joining and finishing techniques.
Food and Nutrition is a significant area of the Design and Technology curriculum at Holy Trinity. We strive to instil a passion for cooking and creativity and for pupils to appreciate the importance of nutrition and healthy eating. It is important for children to know where food has come from, and what constitutes a balanced diet. Pupils follow safe procedures n food preparation, including food hygiene. All children have the opportunity to cook and explore food which is supported through healthy eating principles in PSHE lessons.
