Learning about growing

We had lots of fun this half term during our Growth Topic.

We read the story of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and made model caterpillars and painted symmetrical butterflies. A little pot of tiny caterpillars arrived at school and we have watched them eating and eating and growing and growing into very big caterpillars.  They have made their cocoons now and we shall soon see them turning into beautiful butterflies.

We read the story of 'Jack and the Beanstalk' and made a super beanstalk height chart and plotted our own heights onto it.  We talked about the different characters in the story and retold the story ourselves, remembering the beginning, middle and end of the story and the sequence of events.  We counted magic beans and made the Giant's Castle with our blocks.

Then we read a story called 'Titch' and did lots of activities all about size, using the language of big and bigger, small and smaller and we were very clever making comparisons between lots of objects.

We planted our own sunflower seeds and learned what plants and flowers need to help them grow. We looked after them very carefully and gave them water and put them in the sunshine.

Then we finally read the story of 'The Enormous Turnip' and had so much fun digging for different vegetables in our own allotments.  We had our own little books and made lists of all the different vegetables we had found.

We worked and played together and had lots of fun learning all about Growth.
