Music

Intent

At Holy Trinity Catholic Primary School, we believe that music is an essential part of a broad, balanced and inspiring curriculum. Our aim is to develop pupils’ musical knowledge, skills and confidence while nurturing a lifelong love of music. We want every child to experience the joy of music, develop their creativity and have opportunities to express themselves through singing, listening, composing and performing.

As a Catholic school, we recognise the important role music plays in our faith and school community. We encourage pupils to learn and sing hymns that reflect our Catholic faith, enabling them to participate meaningfully in prayer, collective worship and celebrations throughout the liturgical year.

Implementation

We use Sing Up to deliver our music curriculum, providing pupils with opportunities to explore a diverse range of musical styles, genres and traditions. Through practical, engaging lessons, pupils develop their understanding of musical elements, including pulse, rhythm, pitch and tempo, while building their singing, listening, composing and performing skills.

Learning is designed to build progressively, allowing pupils to revisit and develop their musical knowledge and skills as they move through school. Pupils are encouraged to listen attentively, work collaboratively, express their ideas creatively and develop confidence in sharing and evaluating musical performances.

We are committed to enriching our music provision through specialist expertise and exciting musical experiences. We have worked alongside specialist music teachers and had the opportunity to trial an upcoming Beatles curriculum, giving pupils the chance to explore the music and legacy of one of Liverpool’s most influential bands. This helps to celebrate our local musical heritage while broadening pupils’ musical knowledge and appreciation.

We have also welcomed Rock Kidz into school for a whole-day musical experience, giving pupils the opportunity to engage with music in an exciting and interactive way and celebrate the enjoyment of singing and performing together.

Music is woven into the wider life of our school. Through hymns, prayer and collective worship, pupils strengthen their understanding of how music supports our Catholic identity, brings our community together and provides opportunities for reflection and celebration.

Impact

Through our music curriculum, we aim for pupils to develop secure musical knowledge, increasing confidence and a growing appreciation of music in its many forms. Pupils have opportunities to apply their skills through singing, composing and performing, while developing their ability to listen carefully, work with others and express themselves creatively.

Enrichment opportunities, including working with specialist music teachers, exploring the Beatles’ musical heritage and taking part in our Rock Kidz experience, help pupils make connections between classroom learning and music in the wider world.

We want our pupils to leave Holy Trinity with positive musical experiences, an appreciation of different musical traditions and the confidence to participate in music both in school and beyond. Through our Catholic life, pupils also develop an understanding of the importance of hymns and music in prayer, worship and the celebration of our faith.

The impact of our curriculum is reflected in pupils’ developing musical skills, their engagement in lessons and their participation in the musical life of our school.
